Newborn photography is a market that it seems anyone can do, yet only very few get it right. I see ads all the time on Facebook and Instagram advertising sessions, but what I don’t see too often are high quality images. There are only a few I’ve seen with the level of expertise that can do the genre justice.
When I say expertise, I mean Anne Geddes like expertise, those flawless portraits of amazingly posed babies with doll like skin, yet with all the characteristics and textures remaining. The beautiful props and the expert editing make the image all come together.
In my view if I can’t achieve this at an extremely high level then I won’t do it. I’ve always been somewhat of a perfectionist, so if my newborn shots don’t compare in some ways with the best newborn photographers then i don’t feel like I can make it long term in that industry. There are so many components to this craft, starting from making sure the temperature is correct, have the right props, make sure baby is happy and fed, learn how to wrap baby, learn how to pose baby, camera, lenses, natural light vs artificial light, attend to siblings/family members present, post production, learn software, editing, printing, pricing…. etc etc etc you get the drift..
The images are priceless, they should be like works of art that will adorn the families walls for years to come, timeless memories of the child’s first days of life. This is also a huge reason why I feel if you can’t do it properly and do the baby justice then don’t do it at all. Mums and Dads are prepared to pay for a great experience, from the shoot to the delivery of those large prints or canvasses, so if you are prepared to learn how to perfect the art of newborn photography then there is a steady income to be made. But it’s not easy.
I have dabbled a few times in it and my results have been just ok. I think I am improving and at a stage where I’m seriously thinking about taking on some newborn work for more experience.
Below is an image from a family shoot we did with my brother in law across the weekend. We had minimal props and not much to work with.
I’m the first to admit I’ve got a long way to go and I only did a quick edit on this one, I will update this blog later in the week with a fully edited image.
